Fijian Youth reject Military Draft Constitution

Press Release :  Sunday April 07 2013

A Youth Activist based in Fiji has termed the Draft Constitution issued by the Interim Government in Fiji as a waste of Energy and Resources, and has called the Constitution and the Regime's supporters 'Cowards'.

Peter Waqavonovono, one of a very few of Fiji's emerging Youth Leaders, and a staunch anti-bullying campaigner, has called on the Fiji Interim Government to do the right thing and either reinstate the 1997 Constitution or allow the process within the Yash Ghai Draft Constitution to be tabled at a Constitutional Assembly.

Waqavonovono has also called for Amnesty within the Bainimarama Draft to be removed:
"IF they feel what they did is right in carrying out the Coup in 2006, why try to protect themselves and the people behind them! Could they be aware that right from the beginning they were partaking in a series of Illegal Activities?"

"IF this is so, than this Constitution only serves to protect the current Regime and is a collection of paranoid writings from a Regime that does not entertain Dialogue or opposing views".
The concentration of Power in the Bainimarama Draft is also concerning to Waqavonovono who says that the illegal draft in most likelihood will be made into (illegal) law and cannot be changed because of military rule:
"Young people are not guaranteed a voice and are not recognized in the Bainimarama Draft. I would have wanted to see agencies and platforms created for young people and a specific provision provided for aligning all the different youth groups and upskilling as well as formalizing our current National Youth Council Structure.
Instead we have a Draft that does little to acknowledge youth in Fiji who make up a large percentage of the Fiji population and are active in formal and informal sectors. A good constitution is one that provide avenues for young people to participate and engage their leaders as well as associate freely in groupings"
Waqavonovono says he hopes common sense will prevail "I cannot see myself supporting the Bainimarama Draft or even considering a living in a Fiji under that illegal Constitution. I am calling on Fiji Citizens to opening oppose the Draft and demand radical changes if not than a return to the 1997 Constitution"

Waqavonovono's Youth Groups will be making a submission to the Interim Government.

Pita Waqavonovonos move is a bold one and I salute him for the effort that he has made in to giving more and further reasons why government would impose restrictions that will be made on youths.

If he knew the contents of the 1997 constitution and if he had been the head of company or an organization that is well structured that looks after the welfare of its members from both the good and bad side then I would believe in what he is doing how ever this was a stupid act of hippocracy.

Has he ever been involved in a project that required fast and efficient economic recovery for growth and development. If he has then could he mention if not then I suggest you start getting involved to know what u are getting yourself into.

Let me ask you this question and I hope you answer me sensiblly after considering "Where do you think FIJI would be without a Coup?"

The Speight coup was a coup by the poeple (no military background) who wanted their voices to be heard, why? because he saw that what the chaudry or qarase government did, was not doing what it was suppose to be doing. Oh yeah and did Pita W recall the amouunt of countless strikes that was being made and did it even contribute to developing FIJI or and yes to add on what about the corruption that existed with previous government do you still want that to happen. Oh and may I remind you that it was this 1997 constitution that protected this government which promoted BULLY and CORRUPTION.

What anti-bullying massage are you sending across if you are wanting to involve yourself in something that all potray a life of a "BULLY" and still want the old constitution full of loop whole and prone to crruption reign????

right now I can say that you are no different from Bainimarama. Wanting to go against something when you want to promote peace. Pita what peace are you fighting for man. Atleast Bainimarama has proven himself and his true thought and vision for FIJI worthy of respect.

I suggest you first go and take the peace 101 class to be first advocated on how to promote peace instead of just posting what you think is best without experience and speaking for the people when it is not.

Yes YOUTHS are leaders for tomorrow and you need your voices to be heard how can you be heard when you are least experienced then those before you.... don't you think they were also youths once and what you are feeling now was what they were feeling then which is why now they are old, matured and experienced enough to do what they are doing now...

GROW UP MAN

Why... sounds like you're jealous of Pita. lol.

Let them be, let them learn from their 'mistakes' just as you did with yours(?). No, seems you haven't, so grow up please. You clearly haven't learnt a thing with your treasonous support to your BaiKhum dictatorship.

Pita and Co. have every right to voice their opinions just like you have the right to your funded rhetorical-Peace101.
