RADIO NZ : Fiji’s Prime
Minister’s office has clarified that the announcement of the
Constituent Assembly will await the registration of political parties.
According
to the regime’s decrees, the Assembly was to sit nearly two months ago.
The regime, however, failed to appoint one on time and days later it
decreed that political parties had to apply for re-registration by
mid-February.
Pio Tikoduadua, who is the permanent secretary in the Prime
Minister’s office, has told Fijilive that the only delay in the
announcement of the assembly is due to the need to verify which parties
are registered by the Registrar. In early January, regime commodore Frank Bainimarama said
in a televised address that a draft constitution would be ready by the
end of January. There has been no explanation as to what caused the delay and there
ahs been no word if the decreed deadline of late March for the Assembly
to approve the draft still stands.
